Landlord Registration Scheme
20 February 2014
From 25th February 2014, all private landlords must register for the Landlord Registration Scheme.
In the past, each council area collected information about landlords but many landlords have properties in a number of different council areas. The new centrally-held register will:
- allow tenants, neighbours and local councils to identify if landlords are registered
- provide information on the number of landlords in NI and allow landlords to receive regular updates on their duties and responsiblities
- provide education and support to landlords
- improve tenants' confidence in their landlords
All private landlords must register, the online fee is £70, £80 for a paper registration, regardless of the number of properties owned. It is the landlord's responsibility to ensure that they are registered, whether they use a letting agent or not.
As a landlord, from 25th February 2014, you must register immediately before you let a new tenancy. If you have an existing tenancy, you must register within 12 months of the start of the Landlord Registration Scheme ie before 24 February 2015. If you do not complete your registration, you will be committing an offence and may be issued with a penalty of between £500 and £2,500.
